Director Davis Shares Message for DSPs

Now, more than ever, Ohioans with developmental disabilities and their families need support from providers of service.  Direct support professionals (DSP), including Independent Providers, are the essential ones providing that support across the state. Because the need for DSPs is so extraordinary during this time, many provider agencies throughout Ohio have reached out to the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) for ideas on how to meet this demand.

For Independent Providers who are currently certified but not engaged in the delivery of services, or who may only be providing services on a part-time basis, there are many opportunities available to meet this high demand for service. You can:

  • Notify the local county board of developmental disabilities (CBDD) of their willingness to assist more people
  • Contract with an agency provider for services
  • Be hired as an employee of an agency provider

To encourage these opportunities, DODD has been providing public contact information of certified Independent Providers to local CBDD and agency providers to encourage connections between Independent Providers available to provide supports and people who are looking for DSPs.

Right now, Independent Providers can make a difference in the lives of more people, in more communities, and more ways than ever before.

Hello, my name is Jeff Davis, director of the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. My message today is for our independent providers, those of you that are certified through our department to provide supports for persons with developmental disabilities. Some of you are working full-time now, some of you may be working part-time, and some of you may be looking for work. But we want you now because as you know, and we know, the need for direct support professionals, for providers, is an all-time high. The virus has been terribly vicious in its attempt to disrupt our system and in so many ways that has, of course, for those that we support and their families, and for you and your family. So we need you and we want you. And if you want to pick up hours or you want to commit yourself to our system, and those we support, we want to help you do that. So we thank you for your interest in becoming certified as an independent provider. And we're going to take advantage of that, and share your name with our local county boards of developmental disabilities and agency providers. And there are ways that we can match you in ways that might be fulfilling for you and it certainly will be helpful for those that we support. So thank you again, for all that you're doing today and what you can do if you wish in the future, please know that it makes such a difference. Such a difference for those we support. Again, thank you for what you're doing. Thank you perhaps for what you're about to do. Know that this time in history, we need you more than ever, and we appreciate you.
