What to Expect if Choosing to Enroll in a Waiver

A service and support administrator, or SSA, will be assigned to work with you within 30 days of receiving notice from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities that a waiver is available for you.

Your SSA will

  • meet with you, your family, or other people who support you to begin helping you prepare for your move.
  • talk with you, your family, or other people who support you about your strengths, goals, and areas in which you need support or help from staff, known as an assessment.
  • talk with you about where you want to live. You may choose to live in any county in Ohio. You may choose to live alone or live with family or friends or roommates. When considering where you want to live, the SSA will talk with you about how much you can afford to spend on rent or other household bills.
  • link you with available resources to help you with household expenses, such as rent, food, and utility payments.
  • help you find housemates, if needed, to share household expenses. Many people who cannot afford to live alone or who will not be living with family may need to visit homes where people are looking for a new roommate.
  • help you find housing  to meet your physical needs, if necessary. This may include a home where you can use a wheelchair or where other special equipment can be used. Sometimes it can take time to find or build a home to meet special needs.
  • help you, if needed, with selecting people to provide your waiver services or other care providers like doctors, dentists, and therapists.
  • use the information learned from talking with you and your team to write an Individual Support Plan, or ISP, that describes the services you will get in your home or in other community-based settings.
