Ohio’s Employment First Initiative
DODD Director John Martin joined Governor John Kasich today (March 19, 2012) in a press conference to announce Ohio’s Employment First Initiative. The initiative includes legislation and an Executive Order to improve collaboration among the Departments of Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health, Education and Job and Family Services, and the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission to increase meaningful employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.
The event was held at Dublin Methodist Hospital and hosted by Ohio Health CEO David Blom. Ohio Health participates in Project Search, a school-to-work program that provides real-life work experience combined with training in employability and independent living. Several current Project Search students/employees attended to hear the remarks. Parent and advocate, Sue Hetrick, also attended with her son Micah, who shared a personal experience of his journey to seek and obtain community employment.
At the conclusion of the press conference, Governor Kasich signed the Executive Order. Micah Hetrick joined Governor Kasich to help sign the order and show his support for community employment. Also present for the signing were DODD Director John Martin, Office of Health Transformation Director Greg Moody, Rehabilitation Services Commission Director Kevin Miller, and Job and Family Services Director Michael Colbert.
