My Job

What is Easy Read?

Easy Read is a way to share information in a way that is easier for the widest possible audience.

DODD's Easy Read format is based on examples from England.

England's Equality Act of 2010 created laws that say that information should be easy for everyone to understand including people

  • with visual impairments,
  • with intellectual disabilities [from birth, traumatic brain injury or Alzheimer's],
  • and people who speak English as their second language.

Some things that an Easy Read format pays special attention to are

  • text shape and size,
  • how information is arranged on a page,
  • how pictures are used,
  • what kinds of pictures are used,

Once an Easy Read document is created, it is reviewed by a group of people with different abilities to see if the information makes sense.

In 2015 DODD started partnering with Goodwill Columbus to make our Easy Read tools.

Mencap is an organization in England that helps people with disabilities live the lives they want to live. They work with people with disabilities to change laws, challenge prejudice and support them to live their lives as they choose.

DODD used a lot of examples from Mencap to figure out how to make our information easier for everyone to understand.

DODD was able to get a lot of help from Mencap's Make It Clear Guide and by using pictures from Photosymbols.

Photosymbols is a company is also based in England.

They take pictures that are meant for tools like Easy Read.

Their pictures show people with disabilities in everyday life.

The photo library includes pictures of places and objects to use in Easy Reads.

Photsymbols also offer templates for different kinds of documents like booklets, forms, posters, invites and more. Templates make it simple to get started creating Easy Reads.

DODD uses Photosymbols to make its Easy Reads.

Remember, the most important part of creating easier to read tools is to hear feedback from a group of people that experience a disability to see if the information makes sense.

Easy Read Reviewers

DODD works with Goodwill Columbus to make our Easy Read tools.

When DODD has a new Easy Read tool ready, a team of Easy Read reviewers at Goodwill Columbus read it over.

The Easy Read Reviewer tells DODD if the information is clear and easy to understand.

Reviewers work with a facilitator. Reviewers are paid a small stipend for their work.

Sometimes the words in the new Easy Read tool are very clear.

Sometimes they are not.

If the Reviewers say that the information is not clear then DODD takes the tool back and writes the information differently
